Radioactive waste - DISPOSAL FACILITY

The purpose of the disposal facility is to provide a permanent accommodation for nuclear waste and radiation sources for which the subsequent use is not provided. Therefore, it is a matter of great importance to choose a site, on which the facility should be constructed, according to its geological characteristics, proximity with the surface ground and artesian groundwater, etc.
Radioactive waste disposal facility is located nearby Saakadze village in Georgia. The facility was operational until 1989, however at this point the facility is closed and radioactive waste is no longer stored there.
In recent years, the safety assessment which was carried out in the disposal facility reaffirmed its radiological safety. Nearby territory is fenced and secured to prevent accidental entry. In addition, radiation monitoring systematically takes place by Radioactive Waste Management Department in order to ensure that the facility does not represent any danger to the population and the environment.
