Head of the Agency of Nuclear and Radiation Safety Participates in Regional Meeting in Budapest.
 
On June 22-26, 2026, Nino Utiashvili, Head of the Agency of Nuclear and Radiation Safety, participated in a regional meeting on radioactive source management strategies held in Budapest, Hungary.
The event was held for representatives of the Eastern Europe and Black Sea region countries and was jointly organized by the U.S. Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration's Office of Radiological Security (DOE/NNSA ORS) and the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA).
During the meeting, Nino Utiashvili shared Georgia's experience and best practices implemented in the field. She specifically highlighted a complex and successfully executed operation earlier this year, which involved the safe removal of a radioactive source and its return to the manufacturing country following the expiration of its operational life.
The meeting focused on national strategies for the end-of-life management of radioactive sources, existing challenges, and potential solutions. Participants discussed technical practices and experiences related to the removal, safe storage, processing, and secure transportation of radioactive sources.
Experts and representatives from relevant agencies of 18 countries participated in the event.
