Georgian Delegation Holds High-Level Meetings on the Sidelines of the IAEA 70th General Conference
On the sidelines of the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia Solomon Pavliashvili and Head of the Agency of Nuclear and Radiation Safety Nino Utiashvili held a meeting with Hua Liu, Deputy Director General of the IAEA.
During the meeting, Georgia’s active engagement in IAEA programmes was highlighted, including the Atoms4Food initiative, which aims to promote food security and sustainable development through the application of nuclear science and technology. The sides discussed prospects for future cooperation, as well as opportunities to further enhance knowledge and capacities in the energy sector.
As part of the Conference, bilateral meetings were also held with the heads of various IAEA departments responsible for nuclear safety, radiation safety, transport and waste safety, and operations management, as well as with the Head of the Nuclear Safety, Radioactive Waste Management and Nuclear Energy Non-Proliferation Safeguards Sector of the European Commission.
The meetings focused on the work carried out by Georgia in the field of nuclear and radiation safety, the development of the national regulatory system, and future areas of international cooperation. Particular attention was paid to the implementation of the new Integrated Nuclear Security Support Plan (INSSP), preparations for the Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) mission scheduled for 2027, strengthening the national system for fulfilling IAEA safeguards requirements, as well as issues related to radioactive waste management and the development of relevant infrastructure.
The high-level meetings held on the sidelines of the IAEA 70th General Conference once again highlighted Georgia’s important role in the region. According to international partners, Georgia is a reliable partner and plays an important connecting role in fostering cooperation and sharing experience among the countries of the region. Meetings held in this international format contribute to developing new opportunities for cooperation and further strengthening the country’s capacities in the field of nuclear and radiation safety.
