The purpose of the storage facility is to provide a temporary accommodation for nuclear waste and radiation sources for which the subsequent use is not provided. In 2007 according to the presidential decree (N 840, 18 September 2004) and with the support of the US Department of Energy the storage facility was opened in the territory of Institute of Physics.
For reliable isolation the storage facility is equipped with modern protection systems including radiation monitoring, uninterruptible power supply and special ventilation systems also with radioactive waste handling portals and cranes. The facility area is permanently guarded. Strategic examination and safety assessment of the storage facility was carried out within the framework of European project that clearly demonstrated its operational safety.
