International Atomic Energy Agency was established in 1957 as an independent organization under the auspices of the United Nations. The IAEA exists to pursue the safe, secure and peaceful uses of nuclear sciences and technologies. Agency headquarters is located in Vienna (Austria).
The IAEA assists its Member States (over 200 countries) in developing programs for ensuring nuclear security. Its primary functions in this area are:

  • supporting research for promoting the peaceful uses of atomic power;
  • fostering exchange of scientific methods and achievements;
  • implementing safeguards to verify that nuclear energy is not used for military purposes;
  • Developing standards for health and security.

The IAEA was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on 7 October 2005.
